Fight against drug abuse in Umbilo scores

2014-07-18 00:00

THE fight against drug abuse in Umbilo scored a significant victory this week after the arrest of three suspects and the recovery of 50 kg of dagga.

Two of the suspects were released and one was granted bail of R2 000 over possession of the dagga, which had a street value of R50 000.

The remaining suspect is expected to appear in court again on August 15.

The Durban Flying Squad Narcotics Task Team acted on a tip-off about the drugs being sold in Umbilo on Tuesday afternoon. The drugs were found in Brisbane Road. A house was searched where buckets and plastic bin bags full of dagga were found in the garage.

“We are happy to see them arrested but more needs to be done. The more drug dealers arrested, the less rehab-bound residents there will be. We are halfway to addressing the problem,” said Ben Madokwe, chairperson of the Umbilo Community Police Forum.

“This is exactly what we are marching over. We want to see the drug dealers arrested. These marches are working and we want to see results.” Madokwe said.

A case was opened with Umbilo police.

“Let us all stand together against drug abuse and we must not be intimidated by those who perform such acts,” said KZN police commissioner Lieutenant- General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

Last Saturday Umbilo residents held a march to highlight issues of drug abuse and related crimes. The march concluded at the Durban City Hall where they handed over a memorandum.
