Filling station plan ditched

2013-04-30 00:00

PELHAM residents can rest easy as plans to build a petrol filling station and 24-hour convenience store in Oribi Road have been ditched.

Instead, there is a new proposal for a townhouse development on the three adjoining properties, opposite the Pelham shopping centre.

There has been no activity on the site since 2011 when the idea of a petrol station was first proposed. However, new re-zoning application notices went up, raising concerns among residents that plans for the petrol station were being resurrected.

Ward councillor Vic Winterbach confirmed that the filling station development was off the table.

He said that in order to build townhouses, the developers had to apply for the area to be re-zoned from “special residential”, as it is now, to “general residential”.

Winterbach said residents were generally happier with the development, but there were still concerns.

“I’m getting comments from the residents on how the development is going to affect traffic flow.

“This is a busy intersection and Oribi Road is already congested,” he said.

Winterbach said heritage organisation Amafa had also raised concerns about the demolition of the buildings on the properties since they were over 60 years old.

He added that it was the early stages of the re-zoning and there was still a long way to go, including the public participation process.
