Finally, BBM for iOS and Androids

2013-10-26 00:00

AFTER a few hits and misses, the BlackBerry Messenger app for iOS and Android is finally here.

Over the years users have grown to hate their BlackBerry but could not do without the convenience of BBM.

Even BlackBerry lovers perhaps loved it most for BBM.

Now the app is finally available and free for most smartphone devices on the market.

Within 24 hours the app had been downloaded over 10 million times by Android and iPhone users, one of the best single-day openings for a mobile app to date.

BBM also rose through the rankings on the App Store to be the No 1 free app in more than 75 countries in the first 24 hours, including the U.S., Canada, the UK, Indonesia and most of the Middle East.

User ratings in both the App Store and Google Play have been positive, earning BBM 60 000 five-star reviews on Google Play from about 87 000 reviews.

“This has been an incredible launch for BBM across Android and iPhone devices. The mobile messaging market is full of opportunity for BBM. We intend to be the leading private social network for everyone who needs the immediate communication and collaboration of instant messaging combined with the privacy, control and reliability delivered through BBM,” said Andrew Bocking, executive vice president, BBM at BlackBerry.

The app encompasses most of what all instant messenger (IM) apps include with a little bit extra.

BBM also offers a video calling function, group chats and more.

But while BBM sounds like a glorified version of SA’s most popular IM, MXit, the app is built on a solid platform that offers easy navigation through contacts, but also the closed privacy of only having those you need on.

What’s more important is those who have grown to loathe their BlackBerry devices can finally … ditch without a glitch.

The device offers a seamless transition from BlackBerry to any other device or simple sign up.

If you’re moving from BlackBerry to Android, remember to keep your BlackBerry ID information and back up your contacts before you prepare to make any changes.

If you don’t have your BlackBerry ID password and username, best retrieve your details at the BlackBerry website to avoid losing all your contacts already on your BlackBerry device.

Do you have BBM on your Android or iOS device?

Let me know what you think of it, let’s have a discussion.
