Financial literacy: 970 schools targeted

2011-06-09 00:00

FINANCIAL literacy will now be extended to as many as 970 public high schools in the province after nine years of the programme being run in the Ugu district.

The programme is part of the joint partnership between banks, financial and academic institutions and government and non-governmental organisations. It seeks to educate pupils and create interactive platforms on financial literacy in KwaZulu-Natal. This will be done through targeting in-school youth, out-of-school youth, women and vulnerable groups, small to medium enterprises and government employees.

For schoolchildren, this will be staged through speech contests.

Pupils will first compete within their schools. Winners will move to ward level of the competition. Successful contenders will then move to the quarter-finals and thereafter battle it out at circuit and district level before moving to the finals at provincial level.

Financial training institutions have already pledged bursaries for winning pupils interested in financial qualification from their institution. Other prizes will include laptops and television sets for the winners.
