Find out the true value of your artwork

2014-04-23 00:00

IF you’re a fan of television programmes like Antiques Roadshow and Cash in the Attic on BBC Entertainment and have always wondered how much a painting, vase or piece of silver is worth, then head down to the Abalone Guest House in Glenwood today to get them valued by Strauss & Co Art.

You can bring a maximum of three items.

The valuations will be done by South African art guru and auctioneer Stephan Welz, managing director of Strauss & Co. He will be accompanied by co-director Vanessa Phillips and senior paintings expert Ruarc Peffers.

For an appointment, contact Sue Geddie at 072 602 5052.

Last year, a painting, The Bluff, Durban, by celebrated artist Ruth Prowse, sold for R55 700.

Having found it 25 years before in a refuse bin in Laingsburg, the owner decided to keep it, not knowing its worth.

Prompted by a Strauss & Co advertisement, he had the painting assessed and discovered that it was by Prowse and valued at R25 000 to R30 000.

Imagine his delight when it sold for R55 700 at their auction shortly afterwards.
