Fined for gems, coke

PIETERMARITZBURG man Mobeen Ganie (29) admitted in the city’s regional court yesterday he had unlawfully possessed R69 000 worth of unpolished diamonds during October 2009.

He was fined R30 000 (or three years imprisonment), half of which was conditionally suspended for five years.

Ganie also pleaded guilty to the unlawful possession of 0,31 grams of cocaine on the same occasion, on October 23, 2009. for which

He was fined R1 000 or 12 months’ imprisonment.

Regional magistrate Rose Mogwera ordered that the cocaine and the unpolished diamonds be forfeited to the state.

Soon after his arrest Ganie was granted bail of R20 000.

The trial was postponed on numerous occasions for various reasons.

When the trial got under way yesterday Ganie plead guilty to both charges.

In a brief statement he admitted he was in possession of 634,83 carats of unpolished diamonds in Thomas Street, Pietermaritzburg, on the date in question. The gems were worth about about R69 000

Ganie said he had no permit or authority to possess the diamonds, but did not explain why the stones were on his person.

He further admitted to possessing the cocaine, which is a “dangerous dependence-producing drug”, for his personal use.
