Fire destroys 24 cars at Ijtima meeting

2013-03-30 00:00

TWO dozen cars were totally burned out at a Muslim spiritual meeting, which was held in Woodmead, Johannesburg, yesterday.

A fire started at about 11.30 am at Mia’s Farm, where the Waterval Islamic Institute is hosting about 10 000 men at an Ijtima meeting during the long weekend.

Bilal Ibrahim, one of the meeting’s security officers, said quick thinking by several people had saved some 100 cars from the flames, which had spread rapidly over the short grass of the parking area near the tent in which the meeting was held.

He said people broke windows and pushed the vehicles away from the flames.

Firefighters arrived quickly at the scene and had doused the flames by 2 pm.

Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Nana Radebe said people at the scene allege that children were playing with fireworks and the grass caught fire.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said there were no injuries. Police could not immediately comment.
