Fire drama set to spoil Christmas for family

2014-12-11 00:00

THE family who leapt from their burning flat on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Durban last week say they are anticipating a grim Christmas.

Alain Lokoka said he won’t be able to work as a car guard in the most profitable month of the year until his injuries from the fire heal.

The CCTV footage that shows Lokoka attempting to save his wife and two children has reached over 100 000 views on YouTube.

In the video, Lokoka’s daughters are seen being caught in a blanket held by passers-by responding to his screams for help.

After the children have been safely caught, his wife Liliane Insoni is seen plunging from the burning second-floor flat.

Lokoka said he and his family are still traumatised by the incident. “Sometimes my daughters begin to cry because they remember the incident although they were unharmed by the fire.”

He said his wife, who worked as a domestic worker, is also unable to go to work.

“Her leg was hurt in the fall and she isn’t able to walk properly so she isn’t able to go to work until her leg heals,” he said.

“My hands have been badly burnt in the fire and it is impossible to work like this. I will only go back to work in a month or so, which is after Christmas and I won’t have any money to buy presents for my children,” the wife said.

Lokoka said if he met any of the people who helped him save his family as they jumped from the window he would thank them.

He said he had also had to worry about replacing appliances, a television and clothing that were all damaged in the fire.
