Fire leaves hundreds homeless

2014-09-20 00:00

HUNDREDS of people have been left homeless after a fire rampaged through the Kennedy Road settlement in Durban yesterday.

Residents tried to grab as much as they could when the fire broke out in the settlement at Clare Estate.

“The cause of the fire is uncertain at the moment but it is most likely a paraffin stove or a faulty electrical wire,” said EMS spokesperson Robert McKenzie.

The Durban fire department, Emergency Medical Services, Metro police and SA Police Service were on scene. Around 100 dwellings were reportedly destroyed.

The fire department eventually put out the fire, which was fuelled by a strong wind. “… Many of the occupants are at work and will be coming home to the tragedy,” said McKenzie.

No deaths were reported.

“The paramedics have treated two patients, one a lady in her forties, who was treated for burns, while a man was treated for an electrical shock,” he said.

Shackdweller representative organisation, Abahlali baseMjondolo Shackdwellers, said they were aware of the situation.

“We will be in talks with the ward councillor on how to help the families,” said the group’s Zandile Nsibande.
