Fire rages through Jonathan’s Spa, damaging goods

2014-10-09 00:00

A FIRE raged through Jonathan’s Spar in Mayors Walk on Tuesday night, ruining many goods.

Director Krish Naidoo said the fire was thought to have been sparked by an electrical fault.

“It seems to be an electrical fault that caused one of the lights in the ceiling to burst,” said Naidoo.

The fire, which started in the ceiling, burnt through the ceiling boards and spread to goods in two aisles.

“The health inspector has condemned all the perishable goods, frozen food and the pet food,” said Naidoo.

He said the shop will be closed for a few days while staff clean and sort things out.

Staff member Patrick Zuma, who has worked there for 19 years, said he was shocked when he heard about the fire.

“I have been here since 8 am cleaning. I have been working here in this store since 1995.

“Nothing like this has ever happened before,” said Zuma.

Naidoo said they had no way of knowing the extent of the damage until a full assessment of the products destroyed as a result of the fire has been conducted.

Pietermaritzburg Fire Department spokesperson Sihle Mokoema said they were alerted to the fire at about 11.30 pm and immediately sent a fire engine to the scene.
