Firefighters battle all day to halt blaze at city supermarket

2011-05-09 00:00

FIREFIGHTERS worked for the whole day on Saturday trying to extinguish a fire at Siyaya Cash & Carry in Pietermaritz Street.

The blaze began in the early hours of Saturday and continued until late evening.

The shop, which extends from Pietermaritz to Hoosen Haffejee Street, had to be shut down.

The damage is estimated to run into millions of rands, including smoke damage to goods.

Msunduzi Fire Department station officer Phumlani Khumalo said it is not known how the fire started and they are investigating the cause.

“We received a call from a security guard in the early hours of Saturday morning that the building was burning, and when we arrived, there was already smoke all over town.

“It took us the whole day to put out the fire because of the way in which goods were stored. There were no fire detectors to alert us that the building was burning.”

When The Witness visited the shop the management declined to comment, saying a statement will be issued today.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan confirmed that a case of arson has been opened and that the circumstances are being investigated.
