Fireman (26) shot dead in hijacking

2013-10-15 00:00

A 26-YEAR-OLD fireman has been gunned down during a hijacking in Eastwood as he made a vain attempt to fight to get his car back.

Mzo Prince Mkhize and a friend were attacked by two men in the early hours of Saturday morning at the corner of Bishopstowe and Starling roads in Eastwood.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said Mkhize and his friend were sitting in his VW Polo Classic at 4.30 am when they were confronted by two men who demanded that Mkhize and his friend get out. The gunmen searched them and took their cellphones and money and then ordered the friend to run away, said Zwane.

The friend asked not to be named as he says he now fears for his life. “Maybe they will come back and finish me, as I witnessed this,” said the distressed man.

He said they had been sitting in the car planning to go and meet their friends for a drink.

“They just searched us at gunpoint and ordered us to run away from them … We ran about 200 metres, but then Mkhize said he couldn’t let his car go like that. He turned back … and that is when they fired the gun at him,” said the man fighting back tears. One bullet struck Mkhize in the head.

The family were still in shock as The Witness arrived at his home yesterday. His grieving mother, Ncamsile Zulu, said her son will be remembered for the good things he did for his family.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact Constable Skhumbuzo Ngcobo on 033 387 9621.
