Firemen still dousing factory

2014-03-04 00:00

FIREFIGHTERS were still in attendance at the rubber factory on the Pentrich Road yesterday, dousing the smouldering remnants of the building.

Essack Khan from the Msunduzi Fire department said firemen could no longer enter the building because the steel girders had buckled and there were fears that the walls could cave in. Khan said engineers were yesterday on site assessing the safety aspects of the building and firemen were continuing dampening down the site.

ENV&E, a rubber processing plant, was gutted by fire in the early hours of Saturday morning. While the fire was brought under control, layers of bags of rubber continued smouldering.

The roof had caved in, making it difficult for the firefighters to reach the smouldering debris.

On Sunday, fire chief Billy Paton said they expected to have completely extinguished the fire by today. However, with the building safety now becoming an issue, the smouldering remains may only be completely doused by Thursday. Essack added that the rain has helped the situation. He said forensic teams from the fire department and insurance companies were probing the cause of the fire.
