First aid: nightclub staff act quickly to help player

2009-03-29 00:00

Estcourt adventure camp director, police reservist, first aider and part-time club doorman, Dave Allen, was on the scene of the accident in which Brumbies rugby player Shawn Mackay was injured and administered first aid.

Allen was on duty at the Clapham Grand nightclub when he heard a bang and was told that someone had been hurt.

“I ran out to help because I had my medical equipment in my car.” Allen has taken a basic ambulance assistant course so he can deal with any emergency.

He carries oxygen and other first aid equipment with him, to be prepared at all times. “It felt good to be able to help Mackay and make a difference at the time.”

He described how he ran to fetch the oxygen and helped the team doctor to put a neck brace on the seriously injured Mackay. Allen told The Witness he did not dream his first big medical emergency would be to help a Brumbies player.

He said the other Brumbies players were “hugely emotional” at the scene of the accident. “Two of them were resting against my car. I had to ask them to take it easy because I thought one of them was going to punch my car window because he was so nervous.”

Allen said the Brumbies were checking everything that was happening with their team-mate and were very supportive, “but we had to ask them to give us space”.

When Mackay was taken way in the ambulance, his team-mates all bundled into a bus and followed him. Allen said the team were partying at the club, but were well disciplined.

“We had 17 or 18 huge rugby players and not one incident.”
