First blood to the Aussies

2007-12-07 00:00

Both countries are preparing for qualifying tournaments to be held late next year ahead of the Junior World Cup finals event in 2009.

This, the first of four Test matches at the Steinhoff International Stellenbosch astro complex, saw the South African side start badly as the Junior Hockeyroos camped in the home country’s defensive quarter.

SA U21 captain, Lisa-Marie Deetlefs and her team faced well-drilled opponents who were clearly used to playing together.

Deetlefs and SA U21 goalkeeper Sanani Mangisa, both national players at senior level, shone in the face of the Aussie onslaught.

Australia scored the lone goal of the match 13 minutes after the break via a baseline set-up to an unmarked player.
