First sight for newborn baby girl — a filthy toilet bowl

2014-09-25 00:00

THE first sight of the world for a newborn baby girl who was abandoned by her mother yesterday, was the inside of a filthy toilet bowl.

But members of the public quickly rushed to the aid of the infant, and washed and clothed the baby, who was found lying inside one of the toilets in the female ablution block at the Church Street taxi rank at around 7 am yesterday morning.

According to Netcare 911, paramedics assessed the baby and found that she is in a stable condition.

“The baby was only a few hours old. It appeared that the mother had given birth to the baby in the same location,” said Netcare’s Santi Steinmann.

The police are investigating the incident.

Rene Morcom, from the Pietermaritzburg Pregnancy Assist group, said that September is their busiest month as many babies are conceived in the Christmas and New Year period. According to her, mothers are too scared to look for help so they opt to abandon the baby secretly.

“In this field, there isn’t enough support from social services and adoption is more than often frowned upon in society. We have baby safes that have been installed since 2009 at the St Paul’s Anglican Church that provide an anonymous and safe way for a mom to abandon her baby instead of leaving the babe for dead in bins, fields and public toilets,” Morcom said.
