Five Maritzburg table tennis players in SA games

2007-11-26 00:00

Five Pietermaritzburg pupils have been selected for the table tennis team at the SA Schools Summer Games 2007 in Pretoria in December.

They are Preshanthi Naidoo (grade 10) and Theon Naidoo (grade 11) from Raisethorpe Secondary, Cameron Singh (grade 7) from Allandale Primary School, and Deccan Road Primary’s Keanu Singh (grade 6).

Msunduzi co-ordinator Sandy Naidoo said that they are expecting the standard of this year’s games to be “very high”.

Naidoo said table tennis coaching is offered free to pupils by qualified coaches at the Eddels Sports and Social Club in Mountain Rise.

The club is also affiliated to the South African Table Tennis Board (SATTB).

Theon, who has been playing for six years, said table tennis is a “fast and focused” game, open to children from as young as eight years old.

Cameron encouraged more children to participate, as it is not a seasonal sport and can be played throughout the year.

Matric pupil Preshen aspires to continue playing on at a competitive level after school.

The South African Schools Summer Games 2007 are to be held from December 7 to 12.
