Five cops accused of teen’s rape

KRIEL — Five Mpumalanga policemen will appear in court today on charges of raping a teenager for the past two years.

The five constables from Kriel Police Station were not asked to plead to charges of statutory rape, attempting to defeat the ends of justice, corruption and intimidation when they appeared in the Kriel Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The constables were arrested on Friday morning after police received a tip-off.

Mpumalanga police spokesman Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the teenager, who is now 14 years old and in grade eight at a local high school, claimed that the constables had been raping her since 2006.

She says the attacks began when she was 12 and she had reported her parents for domestic violence.

She claims the policemen pretended to help her, but then raped her in the police barracks and continued to do so each time they called her to the police station as part of the “investigation” into the domestic violence case.

“We received information that the suspects said they would only investigate her parents if she had sex with them,” said Khoabane.
