Five die in horror crash Engine catapults 15?m from accident scene

IN a horror collision yesterday, one man was trapped with four dead friends in one car, while the occupants of the other car suffered the opposite effect: all four soccer fan passengers were catapulted outside.

The Toyota’s entire engine and gearbox were found 15 metres from the scene of the accident, while a ticket stub to the MTN8 Cup Final was the only object found inside.

Veteran paramedics described the accident scene early yesterday morning as “absolute carnage”, and one of the worst small car collisions they’d ever seen.

One man in the Toyota died, and two men and two women from the other car — a Jumbo Golf — were killed on impact at the corner of Somtseu and Stalwart Simelane (Stanger Street) roads.

Garrith Jamieson, operations director for Rescue Care, said a passenger from the Golf endured an hour of horror, trapped with four crushed friends while emergency workers tried to pry him out.

“He spoke to us at the scene, but he was confused and seriously injured,” he said. “Once the fire department had used the jaws of life to remove the roof of the vehicle and free the trapped patients, [we] discovered that four of the occupants had suffered fatal injuries.”

The lone survivor from the Golf and three from the Toyota were treated at Addington Hospital.

A large section of Stanger Street, from Old Fort Road to Somtseu, was closed while police and firemen worked to clear the carnage. Jamieson said all nine involved in the crash were “apparently friends” and that at least one of the groups appeared to have been at Moses Mabhida Stadium three hours earlier.

Robert Mckenzie, spokesperson for KZN Emergency Medical Services, said police were

investigating the cause of the tragedy.

Once the fire department had used the jaws of life to remove the roof of the vehicle and free the trapped patients, (we) discovered that four of the occupants had suffered fatal injuries.
