Five die in storm car crash

2014-10-18 00:00

A HORROR crash in the midst of a raging storm on Thursday night left five people dead.

The head-on collision between a cash-in-transit vehicle and an SUV on the R34 passing through Zululand killed three occupants of the SUV on scene, while four people were transported to Vryheid hospital in critical condition.

According to a reliable source, who cannot be named as he is unauthorised to speak to the press, the remaining survivor from the SUV and an occupant from the cash-in-transit vehicle died in hospital last night.

The two survivors from the crash remain in a critical condition and have been transported to La Verna private hospital in Ladysmith, said the source.

A hospital source said the two remain in intensive care, but are conscious.

“One of them has just been sent to theatre. They are in a serious condition.”

KZN Community Safety spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane confirmed the head-on collision, but said the cause was still being investigated.

“It is difficult to know the cause. We can’t rule out the possibility of the bad weather, but we are still investigating,” said Ncalane.

The names of the dead were not released yesterday.
