Five injured as Merc crashes into taxi

2013-04-01 00:00

FIVE people were injured in an accident on the corner of Bombay and Khan roads yesterday afternoon.

A Mercedes-Benz travelling down Khan Road slammed into a minibus taxi carrying five people as it was about to turn into the same road.

People at the scene told The Witness that the Mercedes allegedly skipped a red robot, causing the crash.

However, the driver of the Mercedes said he had the right of way because his light was green, and that it was the taxi driver who was at fault.

“I was coming down the road going to Copesville. The robot was green for me and I had the right of way. The taxi was coming down the road and he didn’t stop,” said the driver of the car, who refused to be named.

Two people suffered serious injuries while those of two others were minor, said ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks.

Officials from the fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to remove a seriously injured passenger trapped in the taxi.

Once the man was safely pulled out, a throng of bystanders gathered around to take a look at him before being pushed back by a police officer.

Banks said advanced life support was performed on the man before he was taken to Northdale Hospital.

“The four other patients were treated for minor to serious injuries. The most serious of the four was treated for suspected neck and back injuries,” he said.

All the injured — including the taxi driver — were taken to various hospitals around Pietermaritzburg.
