Five killed in taxi crash

Five people were killed and 16 seriously injured when a taxi hit a bridge pillar at Umgababa on the south coast yesterday.

According to traffic authorities, the taxi was travelling in the southbound lane of the N2 when the driver lost control and crashed into the pillar.

Paramedics and emergency services had to free trapped passengers from the wreckage. Netcare spokesman Chris Botha said one victim in a critical condition was airlifted to Albert Luthuli Hospital.

“It was a horrific scene. Six passengers are in a critical condition, while 10 are in a serious condition,” he said.

• Fifteen people were seriously injured when a truck collided with two taxis and a car in Pinetown yesterday.

It is believed the truck shot through a red traffic light and then collided with the taxis and the car near Richmond Road.

Police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

A faulty set of traffic lights in Durban’s Berea suburb has caused eight serious accidents in the past three days.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said paramedics have been called to accidents at the Berea and Hunt Road intersection — where the traffic lights have been out of order for the past week — at least twice a day. He said luxury vehicles like BMWs and Mercedes Benz have been written off in some of the crashes, but there have been no serious injuries.
