Five more Sassa officials suspended over disability grant fraud

THE South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday suspended five more of its officials on suspicion of having defrauded the department in the Msane area, Mtubatuba.

Two other officials were suspended and arrested earlier on suspicion of defrauding the department of R4 million.

Department spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the illegal actions of the suspended officials were detected by the department’s internal fraud management unit, which monitors daily activities within the department.

According to Letsatsi, the officials were cheating people of their disability grants and submitting claims for “ghost” beneficiaries.

“In terms of the amount defrauded, it is clear this has been going on for a period of time and we are working hard to clear the department of criminals,” he said.

The suspended officials are expected to appear before the internal disciplinary committee on June 17 and 18.

The officials have been suspended with pay and are not allowed anywhere near Sassa offices.
