Five more arrested over Freedom Day ambush

2009-04-30 00:00

FIVE more suspects have been arrested in connection with the ANC motorcade ambush in Swayimane area where 19-year-old Zimisele Hlongwane was killed and six women injured on Freedom Day.

This brings to seven the number of suspects arrested.

One of the suspects, Mphatiseni Gumede (27), who was arrested on the day of the attack, appeared at the Camperdown Magistrate's Court on charges of murder and attempted murder. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance in May. A second suspect who was also arrested earlier this week had been found in possession of illegal firearms, but the police cannot link him to the shooting until ballistic results are obtained. Police spokeswoman Director Phindile Radebe said more guns were found yesterday and are believed to have been used during the ambush.

The ANC has welcomed the latest arrests and called on the IFP to condemn the incident. "The IFP leadership must come out strongly to condemn their members' involvement in the attacks of ANC members otherwise people will start believing that they are acting on the mandate of their top leadershipÉ," ANC provincial secretary Senzo Mchunu said.

He said the ANC had learnt that one of the people arrested is the IFP chairperson in the Swayimane area.

IFP councillor Musawenkosi Mncwabe confirmed this.
