Five ringing phones get suspected thief thrown in the cells

2008-05-09 00:00

Thohoyandou — A suspected cellphone thief was nabbed when five cellphones he was carrying started ringing at the same time while he was travelling in a taxi.

The suspect, whom one passenger described as a "hungry and tired-looking" illegal immigrant, was arrested at a taxi rank in Thohoyandou when he couldn’t explain why he had so many cellphones on him.

Paul Mudzimu, (32), was not asked to plead to charges of possession of suspected stolen property when he appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

A passenger said the phones rang for about five minutes before the driver threatened to kick Mudzimu off unless he switched them off.

Captain Mashudu Malelo could not confirm the passenger’s account. He said police on patrol at the taxi rank confronted Mudzimu as he had been acting suspiciously.

Malelo said Mudzimu spoke in broken English and admitted that he was a Shona from Zimbabwe.
