Five teens arrested for alleged rape

FIVE teenage boys have been arrested for allegedly raping a teenage girl in Northdale on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the boys are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg court this week.

Residents around Thayil Road, where the incident took place, said it happened during a drunken day-long party at one of the pupils’ homes. The high school pupils were allegedly smoking and drinking and there were no adults present at the time.

Two residents, who asked not to be named and who live close to where the incident happened, had watched the party from their home and called the police after noticing something was amiss and going to investigate. They found the girl half-naked in one of the rooms.

They said she was bent over the bed without her underwear and seemed completely “out of it”. They feared she might have been raped.

One of the residents said: “On Tuesday morning about 20 school children had come to the house. There were about 12 boys and eight girls and they were there from the morning until about 1.30 pm.

“They were there drinking and partying. We were sitting here watching them. Many of them seemed to be drunk,” he said.

Later when the pupils began leaving, they noticed that one of the female pupils had not left the house.

Another source said she and the girl’s cousin, who rent rooms from her, decided to go inside and check on her. “We went to the bedroom and we found the girl kneeling. Half of her body was on top of the bed, her panties were off and she was totally out of it.”

She said they suspected she might have been raped and they called the police. “The police came and took all the boys that were there.”

The two sources, however, said they were not sure whether the girl was raped.

Attempts to get comment from the family who live at the house where the incident is alleged to have happened were unsuccessful. A relative at the house said she was only visiting and that the family was not there.

Attempts to speak to the victim’s family late yesterday were unsuccessful. The Witness understands they were at the doctor’s office at the time.
