Floating bridge for city run

2014-02-18 00:00

THE Witness Maritzburg City Marathon, held in conjunction with Clover and Vuma 103 FM, takes place in the city this weekend.

Over 6 000 runners are expected to participate in the various events that are on offer.

Sunday’s main events will see the 42km marathon and 21 km half marathons start from outside Merchiston School, where big names such as Tanith Maxwell and Munya Jari have been preparing to earn their share of the R70 000 in prize money on offer.

Entries for the two main events are closed, but the festivities for what is the 18th edition of the marathon begin on Thursday, when a flame lighting ceremony will take place at Pietermaritzburg’s Carbineers Drill Hall from 5.30 pm.

A mini expo will be held at the Drill Hall on Friday, where registration will be open for the fun runs that are set to take place over the weekend as part of the schedule — a trail run of 14 km or 7 km on Saturday and 10 km fun run on Sunday.

A floating bridge will also be used to get the runners over the Duzi river and it has been billed as one of the route’s most attractive features.

Saturday will also see a number of more manageable runs happening in and around the drill hall, all falling in line with the 42 km and 21 km main event distances.

There will be options for a 4,2 km or 2,1 km run, a 420 metre and 210 metre run, as well as the highly-anticipated 42 metre ‘toddler trot’ and a 21 metre ‘nappy crawl’.
