Flyhalf swops for Sharks and Brumbies

2012-03-30 00:00

THE Sharks and the Brumbies will both look to new flyhalves to spark their challenge in tomorrow’s Super Rugby clash in Canberra.

The Sharks, disappointed after their 34-30 loss to the Waratahs at the weekend, and the Brumbies, buoyed by their win over the previously unbeaten Highlanders, have made changes to the pivot role.

The Sharks were forced into a change with Pat Lambie suffering an injured jaw against the Waratahs and Freddie Michalak will replace him tomorrow. Brumbies coach Jake White, in turn, is looking to add an edge to his team’s attacking edge by rejigging his backline and making a change at flyhalf.

Matt Toomua, who was injured three weeks ago, is back and Christian Lealiifano returns to inside centre.

“We spent a lot of time working in the pre-season with Matt and we want to see that Matt grows from game to game,” White told reporters. “He’s got a skill set that helps the way we play.

“I see a progression for him now in the next couple of games — he was a sensation as a youngster and I’m hoping the more games he gets at number 10 the better he’s going to become, not just for us but for Australian rugby.”

White, in making his backline changes, has dropped league convert Joe Tomane who scored two first-half tries against the Highlanders.

“We’ve got to pick who we think is the best team,” White said. “You can feel a bit disappointed, which I’m sure he does, but I think he’s accepted the fact that it’s all in the best interests of the group.

“Everyone understands that it’s not a case of being sentimental.”

White has had to make a change in the front-row with Wallaby prospect Dan Palmer ruled out for with flu.

Wallaby Ben Alexander shifts to tighthead with Irish U20 internatonal Ruaidhri Murphy at loosehead.

The match kicks off tomorrow at 10.40 am (South African time).
