Flying start for Dusi charities

2007-12-24 00:00

THE three official charities of the Hansa Powerade Dusi 2008 are off to a flying start for the event to be held in January.

Ray de Vries, event spokesman, said a total of over R110 000 has already been bid on a place in the much sought-after charity batch.

De Vries said the Hansa Powerade Charity Batch is a batch of 60 places that are auctioned online. He said this is the fifth batch to leave each morning of the race so paddlers are ensured of an early start. “We now have three areas that the charity batch will help: the Aids orphans, the environment and animals in the Valley. All the proceeds of the batch auction go directly into the areas that paddlers go through during the race,” said de Vries. All paddlers have the choice to raise funds for Starfish, SPCA, Dusi Umngeni Conservancy Trust (DUCT) or Equal Split, and bid for a place in the batch prior to the race.

De Vries also said the minimum bid in 2007 for a place in the batch was R4 512 and the highest bid reached an incredible R26 000.

“The event is fast becoming known for its charity push and … we are going to push as hard as we can to beat the 2007 total of R500 000.”
