BOOK REVIEW:

’Til The Cows Come Home

Tod Collins

Triple Creek Publishing

SOME psychologist searching for a thesis should investigate why vets write. James Herriot started the fashion; the Witness has its own Village Vet columnist and now a collection of stories from Tod Collins, Underberg vet and regular and successful entrant in the Witness True Stories competition, has been published.

Maybe it is relief from a stressful and physical job; maybe being a vet is a profession that attracts observant and thoughtful people. Whatever the reason, most veterinary writings are lively and entertaining, and Tod Collins’s are no exception. It’s not all froth, though. Some of the stories are funny, some frightening, some whimsical and some sad. The last involve the moments of heartbreak that all animal owners know, but Collins tells them movingly and without sentimentality.

’Til The Cows Come Home, with attractive illustrations, is a collection that should appeal to animal lovers, and to those of us who enjoy a bit of gossip about a community in the Berg foothills that many locals will know well.

There will be a launch of ’Til the Cows Come Home at Bookworld in the Cascades Centre at 5.30 for 6 pm tomorrow. For more information, or if you wish to attend, phone 033 347 1901 or e-mail bookworld@lantic.net
