For your health: Facts on the right foods to eat

BLUEBERRIES for the brain. Celery for the nerves. It sounds too good to be true, but there’s plenty of evidence that certain foods really can make you feel better. But where do you start if you want to change the way you eat?

Developing new tastes and food choices can be daunting but there is plenty of information out there to guide you, like these two books by much-published American health guru Susan Smith Jones. Smith Jones, who has a PhD on the subject and taught health studies at UCLA for 30 years, has written these two concise, very readable books with the beginner in mind, although even practising health nuts will find something of value in their contents.

The Healing Power of Naturefoods and Health Bliss feature 50 revitalising fruits, grains, herbs and vegetables that have medicinal properties, providing a summary of their benefits and information that is sometimes surprising. How many people, for example, know that many greens are packed with protein, and that broccoli contains almost twice as much protein per gram as steak?

Both books also cover the benefits of healthy habits such as getting sufficient sleep and exercise — although the latter goes into slightly more depth —  and provide recipes that put into practice the principles of healthy eating.
