Former Hilton College boy killed in U.S.

A FORMER Hilton College pupil, Omar Sykes, was shot and killed on Thursday night outside Howard University’s North-west Washington campus in the United States.

On Friday, there was a candlelight vigil in honour of his memory at the campus.

The 22-year-old American matriculated at Hilton College in 2009.

According to the Washington Post online, Sykes was a rising senior and business marketing major at Howard University.

The newspaper quoted the police saying Sykes’s killing was a random robbery attempt.

Sykes’s mother, Sherry Zalika Sykes, was born in Pennsylvania and was a diplomat with the U.S. Consulate General in Durban at the time that her son was attending school at Hilton College.

Hilton College spokesperson Paul Guthrie said Sykes played basketball and rugby, and was capable in academics.

“He was a pleasant boy,” Guthrie added.

In a Washington Post article, Sykes was described as a community service-orientated young man.

An article also quoted a Howard student who said: “He [Sykes] always had a hug and a smile, every single time he saw me”.

An American rapper and actor, known by his stage name Common, tweeted: “If you’re in DC, come remember the life of a good young brother Omar Sykes who’s life was taken by senseless violence … (sic).”

The tweet was retweeted 232 times by the time of going to press.
