Former night editor recalls moonlit night

2013-07-20 00:00

THE anniversary of man’s historic landing on the moon 44 years ago brought back memories for Howick resident A. R. (Dick) Jones (81), who was the night editor of The Natal Witness in 1969.

“July 20, that year was the longest night of my 20-year career as a journalist,” he said yesterday. “I arrived at the newspaper offices at 6 pm and left the following morning at 6 am, after producing three special editions over 12 hours.”

He recalls arriving home in Scottsville, and creeping quietly into the kitchen to make breakfast. But his wife heard him, appeared in the doorway and sleepily asked where he was going at that time of the morning.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he told her. “I’ve just come home from work!”

The front page he designed for the edition dated Monday, July 21, is among Jones’s souvenirs. It featured photos of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and an artist’s impression of Armstrong’s first walk on the moon’s surface.
