Found at last: brother’s Body recovered from stream

2010-10-13 00:00

The body of Kobus van Rooyen (53) who went missing near the Lion Park six weeks ago, has been found.

Van Rooyen’s sister, Martina Roux, yesterday paid tribute to police Warrant Officer Jack Haskins who she said worked tirelessly to help find her brother.

She said her brother’s steel-toed boots were missing when he was found and the family suspects foul play.

Roux said she had paid a man to help look for him. He initially told her he could not locate her brother at all, but stated later that he had spotted the body but was too afraid to tell her.

Police said Van Rooyen’s badly decomposed body was found late on Monday lying face down in a stream in a valley 2,5 km from his home.

It was only recovered yesterday morning.

Roux said her brother could never have walked that far as he was unstable on his feet.

Police said Van Rooyen was identified by his clothing and a defect on his hand.

Roux said the family is relieved to have closure. “We have been through a very hard time.”

Van Rooyen suffered brain damage as a result of a car accident and was on medication when he went missing.

An inquest docket has been opened and a postmortem will be held, said police.
