Four Sharks in Springbok standby squad

2011-08-25 00:00

FOUR Sharks are among the 12 players who were yesterday placed on standby should the Rugby World Cup squad be hit by injury.

The four Sharks are wing Lwazi Mvovo, scrumhalf Charl McLeod, flank Jean Deysel and lock Alistair Hargreaves. Lock Gerhard Mostert, who played for the Sharks in Super Rugby but is now in France, is also on stand-by.

The Springboks had their first training session yesterday and a number of players were on the sidelines.

Peter de Villiers, Springbok coach, said that they were all as the result of bumps and bruises picked up in Saturday’s victory over New Zealand.

“If there was a Test match on Saturday, they’d all be available to play other than Frans Steyn [hamstring] and Patrick Lambie [shoulder], ” said De Villiers.

“We’ll have a full squad to choose from for the first match of the tournament on September 9.”

THE STANDBY SQUAD IS:

Zane Kirchner, Blue Bulls. Lwazi Mvovo, Sharks. Wynand Olivier, Blue Bulls. Elton Jantjies, Golden Lions. Charl McLeod, Sharks. Ashley Johnson, Free State Cheetahs. Jean Deysel, Sharks. Gerhard Mostert, Stade Francais. Alistair Hargreaves, Sharks. Dean Greyling, Blue Bulls. Werner Kruger, Blue Bulls. Adriaan Strauss, Free State Cheetahs.
