AMAZULU will honour last season’s top-performing players at an awards ceremony at Durban’s Suncoast Casino on Friday.

The Player of the Year award, which was scooped by rookie striker Ayanda Dlamini last season, will be contested by midfielder Sthembiso Dlamini, diminutive utility player Sbusiso Hadebe, central defender Thamsanqa Sangweni and defensive midfielder Ramson Zhuwawo.

There is a new feature — the Moment of Brilliance — where fans and the public are asked to vote for their best moment of the season. Left-back Marc van Heerden, Sbusiso Hadebe and goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela are in the running for the award.

Fans participate on the Facebook and Twitter pages that are linked to the Usuthu website.

Other awards up for grabs are the Players’ Player, Rookie, Development Team and Chairman’s Award.

Meanwhile, it’s all systems go for the inaugural KZN Premier’s Charity Cup set to be contested for by four local clubs in Umlazi on July 31.

Premiership sides Maritzburg United, AmaZulu and Lamontville Golden Arrows and National First Division side Thanda Royal Zulu are set to compete in the cup.

According to the organisers, who are due this week to formally announce the day-long event scheduled for King Zwelithini Stadium, the aim is to help the local sides prepare for the upcoming season.

Jomo Biyela, director of sports for Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, said the tournament will be played in the format of the Charity Cup, with two teams locking horns in the morning fixture and others meeting in a midday clash.

The event is expected to gain support for KZN’s football-starved fans as there will be a Carling Cup tournament at Soccer City in Gauteng on the same day. Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will participate in the Gauteng event.
