Four teachers face law court and disciplinary hearing

2012-04-05 00:00

FOUR teachers are in double trouble over allegedly meting out corporal punishment that led to a pupil’s partial castration.

Not only did they appear in court yesterday on charges of assault, but they are also unable to evade a disciplinary hearing by resigning from their jobs.

“We did not accept their resignations because they did not comply with the law, which requires 90 days notice,” education department spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa told The Witness yesterday.

In that time, he said, they would undergo a disciplinary hearing.

The teachers, from Nsikeni High School in Umzimkulu, appeared in the Nsikeni Periodical Court yesterday. Zibuse Jama (27), Sibonile Mabuntane (23), Fana Ntimane (25) and Pinky Thompson (28) all covered their faces as they entered the courtroom at the local police station.

Following a brief appearance, their families helped the teachers avoid reporters and drove them away in two cars.

They were released on a warning and will appear again on May 2 for the alleged assault on a teen that occurred in January.
