Fourie cited for attack on Daniel

WESTERN Province captain and flank Deon Fourie has been cited for attacking the face of the Sharks’ Keegan Daniel during Saturday night’s Currie Cup game at Newlands.

The Sharks lost their top spot on the log after their disappointing 25-19 to Province.

Fourie made contact with Daniel’s face in the 12th minute of the game. The Sharks number eight left the field for treatment to the cut close to his eye. No action was taken by referee Craig Joubert at the time.

Fourie will appear before a disciplinary committee in Cape Town today. Advocate Donny Jacobs has been appointed as the judicial officer.

On the injury front, the news is good and bad for the Sharks. They have lost veteran lock Marco Wentzel to a dislocated shoulder but, on a happier note, one of South Africa’s brightest young talents, Pieter-Steph du Toit, is back from injury and available to play against Griquas on Saturday.

Wentzel, who has played consistently well in the first round of the Currie Cup, damaged his shoulder after half-an-hour of Saturday’s game against WP in Cape Town.

Team doctor Alan Kourie said yesterday that Du Toit, who was included in the Springbok squad in June before withdrawing with a sternum injury, had recovered fully and is available for selection this weekend.

Kourie said that wing S’bura Sithole (broken hand) should be back within a week or two while lock Anton Bresler, and centres Frans Steyn and Paul Jordaan are currently in rehab.

Griquas won the Currie Cup opener at King’s Park and they will fancy their chances in Kimberley where the Sharks have struggled in recent years. Saturday’s match kicks off at 3 pm.
