Fraud: Correctional services official’s assets frozen

2009-07-24 00:00

THE Asset Forfeiture Unit has been granted a court order restraining the assets of a former supervisor employed in the cash office at Sevontein Correctional Centre at Elandskop who is accused of defrauding the department of R1 174 439 between February 2002 and October 2007.

The accused, Vumeluyise Ngcobo, allegedly admitted sole responsibility for the fraud to a senior colleague after the misappropriation was discovered during 2008, according to papers before the high court.

However, in a later interview with a member of the SA Police Service, he denied involvement. He faces fraud charges.

He was dismissed in June last year.

The National Director of Public Prosecutions applied for an order restraining all Ngcobo’s realisable assets, including vehicles, money and pension benefits, but the court was told that the value of his assets is not more than R594 706. Although he is the owner of four vehicles, all are heavily financed and could not be restrained.
