Fraud: I’m not guilty, says City official

2010-12-08 00:00

MSUNDUZI municipal official Kevin Perumal (42) has pleaded not guilty in the regional court in Pietermaritzburg to allegations of fraud involving R30 000 over his alleged abuse of travel and subsistence claims dating back to 2006 and earlier.

Perumal has denied any wrongdoing.

His trial got under way before regional magistrate Chris van Vuuren this week, but has been postponed again until March 2 next year.

Some of the allegations levelled against Perumal are that he lodged travel claims with Msunduzi Municipality for “official” trips to Umshwati Municipality to conduct disciplinary hearings in 2006 while at the same time claiming payment from the Umshwati Municipality in his private capacity as a consultant.

On some occasions it is alleged that Perumal submitted travel claims even though the disciplinary hearings in question did not proceed on the reported dates.
