Fraud: speaker resigns

2009-10-30 00:00

THE Speaker in the uMngeni Municipality, Surya Kumari Pillay, who was convicted of housing fraud, resigned from her position yesterday.

She still remains a councillor.

This follows hot on the heels of the Mayor, Edward Dladla, vacating the R1,7-million house bought for him by the council.

These developments have given rise to speculation whether other changes are on the cards, especially as a special executive committee (Exco) meeting was called for today.

Pillay’s resignation was announced during a council meeting on Wednesday, but no explanations were given and nominations were called for an acting speaker in the interim.

The former speaker and her husband, Moonsamy Pillay, were found guilty of fraudulently obtaining a RDP house in Howick West.

The couple stated in the application for a housing subsidy that they were unemployed.

This was despite the fact that Pillay, a councillor, was earning R4 466 at the time.

To qualify for a subsidy a family has to have an income of less than R3 500 per month.

Opposition parties questioned why Pillay remained as a speaker, a position widely regarded as one of trust.
