Freak accident: Pipe in shoulder

2012-11-01 00:00

Boet Roux (68) from Viljoenskroon shortly after a pipe went through his windscreen and shoulder.

WHAT would you do if a length of pipe fell off a truck and burst through your windscreen before stabbing you right through your shoulder? This is what happend to Boet Roux (68) when he was driving on the Viljoenskroon road to Potchefstroom with his wife Lynette, their daughter and their grandson.

Roux calmly stopped his bakkie, took hold of the protruding end of the pipe, pulled it out of his seat and flagged down a passing bakkie to take him to Milpark Hospital.

The pipe was sticking some one-and-a-half metres out of the bakkie’s window. “I did not feel anything. There was a crash and a bump against my shoulder,” he said.

“When I looked back I saw this pipe sticking right through my seat against the back seat on which my daughter [Lieze] sat. I thought, ‘Jinne, these things only happen in movies.’ I still cannot believe it.”

After the first of a series of operations, he said he was lucky that no nerves or major arteries were severed.

He said he had kept the pipe, but not at his farm, and jokingly added that a farmer can always use a length of pipe somewhere.
