Freak crash: taxi runs over woman

2011-10-19 00:00

A FEMALE pedestrian is in a critical condition at Edendale hospital after she was run over by a minibus taxi during a freak accident near the corner of Pietermaritz and Peter Kerchhoff streets yesterday.

The taxi was driving towards West Street taxi rank when an Opel Corsa van, which was in the other lane, allegedly turned abruptly into Peter Kerchhoff, crashing into the taxi.

The taxi was forced off the road and on to the pavement, pinning the pedestrian against the steel palisade fence of a nearby building.

Taxi driver Simpiwe Ndlovu, whose taxi was not loaded, said he didn’t see the bakkie coming.

“Although I was pushed off the road, I tried to control the vehicle, but ended up running over an innocent pedestrian,” said the shaken driver.

Two BMWs parked next to each other in front of the building were damaged, one badly.

Both the BMW owners were puzzling over how their vehicles could have been damaged in the accident.

Jeff Wicks of Netcare 911 said the bakkie driver was taken to St Anne’s Hospital.

The flow of traffic at the busy junction was disrupted for several hours after the crash.
