Freak winds delay Durban train

2011-10-04 00:00

“FREAKISH” winds led to a cancellation of an annual “grudge” bowls competition between Ladysmith’s Siege Town Moths and Newcastle’s Monte Stanco Moths, scheduled to be held at the Balele Game Park in Utrecht on Saturday.

Bowler Fiona Cloete said the gusts forced her family to sleep in their bakkie rather than their tents.

“The wind shook the bakkie so hard that we thought it was going to tip over,” Cloete said.

The bad weather also inconvenienced about 100 train passengers from Pietermaritzburg and Durban, who spent the night on the floor at Standerton station on Sunday after their train had failed to arrive and replacement buses only arrived yesterday morning.

The train was halted by trees blown over on the line, and the replacement buses were delayed by the strong winds and rain, said a Passenger Rail Agency of SA spokesperson. — WR.
