Free State make KZN Inland chase leather

2009-10-17 00:00

TWO dropped catches cost KZN Inland dearly on the first day of the U19 Provincial Challenge three-day match at the Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

Free State U19 opening batsman Ian Finlay was grassed on 72 and Bokang Mosena on 12, both off Inland skipper and opening bowler Dustin Chaplin.

Finlay went on to make 157 and Mosena was 94 not out when a thunderstorm had the players hurrying off the field at 2.30 pm.

At that point the visitors were sitting pretty at 347 for five with 13 of their allotted 85 first-innings overs left and the run rate increasing by the over.

After a break of one hour and 50 minutes, in which tea was taken, Mosena and Khotso Mokhachane returned to the wicket and the former duly went on to an excellent century including 12 fours and a six. Just 20 minutes later, it was over for the day — bad light the culprit.

Finlay batted with supreme confidence, hitting 17 fours and a six in his knock of nigh on four hours.

Chaplin (two for 100 in 20) and Maritzburg Christian School’s Marcel Frentzl (two for 63 in 20) were the pick of the Inland bowlers, the latter impressing most with a tidy line and length most of the time.

Free State’s success was built around three significant partnerships of 58 (fourth wicket) plus 170 for the fifth and 82 for the sixth.

Inland could not field a full-strength side, as the first XI players from the province’s top four cricket schools — Maritzburg College, Hilton, St Charles and Michaelhouse — were unavailable.

It is a great pity, when drawing up the U19 provincial fixtures, that the authorities didn’t recognise these top schools had key matches at the weekend.
