Free state Premier’s ‘fire pool’

2015-04-29 00:00

IN what may yet go down as the Free State version of President Zuma’s “fire pool”, the DA has accused Free State Premier Ace Magashule on splurging R8 million in taxpayers money to make his pool smaller so that the water can heat up quicker.

The DA said this was “ridiculous attempt” by the provincial Department of Public Works to justify the cost of renovations to Free State House in 2011/12.

In the reply the department revealed that the R8 million renovations included work to the “Pool House and Cloak Room” as well as extending the entertainment facilities. “In a ridiculous attempt at justification, the original pool was considered too large and too deep, preventing the water from warming up in summer, causing much difficulty for Premier Magashule and his children when lap swimming,” said DA MPL Leona Kleynhans.

Renovations were also made to the guesthouse, revamping it from a three bedroom and one bathroom to a four bedroom en-suite luxury guesthouse. “While hundreds of thousands suffer in poverty, you can be sure that Ace Magashule and his family enjoy the good life,” said Kleynhans.
