2011-04-27 00:00

THE rural town of uMzimkulu in southern KZN will be bustling today as it plays host to the provincial Freedom Day celebrations.

The event is scheduled to start at the town’s Koki Sportsfield at 9 am. Premier Zweli Mkhize will deliver a keynote address and leaders from different sectors of the society are also expected to deliver speeches.

Vukani Mbhele, the spokesperson for the Department of Arts and Culture, which organised the event, said the proceedings will start with the unveiling of a mural representing the South African flag and coat of arms. The artwork is part of the department’s Beautification of Public Spaces programme.

“This will be followed by the planting of 30 yellowwood trees [which are national symbols], spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs and Rural Development.

“A multi-cultural street parade will wrap up the first phase of the programme,” Mbhele said.

After the speeches the programme sees a mini-festival featuring popular gospel artist Kholeka, Afro-pop band Malini and local maskandi artists Ichwane leBhaca and iNyon’emhlophe.
