Freedom of town: fighting forces honoured

2012-05-11 00:00

THE Emnambithi/Ladysmith Council has resolved to offer the Freedom of the Town to the Duke of Lancaster Regiment and Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans’ Association (MKMVA).

This is to recognise the role of the Duke of Lancaster Regiment in the siege of Ladysmith during the Anglo Boer War and the important part that combatants of the MKMVA played in the freedom struggle, particularly the armed struggle within Emnambithi/Ladysmith.

The following regiments from the South African National Defenc e Force will take part in the ceremony: Natal Field Artillery, Vrystaat Artillerie Regiment, Transvaal Staats Artillerie, 121 SA Infantry Battalion, Durban Light Infantry, Natal Mounted Rifles, Umvoti Mounted Rifles, 15 Maintenance Unit, 1 Medical Battalion Group, 5 SA Infantry Battalion, Natal Carbineers, Light Horse Regiment, SA Navy and SA Police Service.

The South African Police Service, which has also been granted the Freedom of the Town, will be exercising that right.

The regiments will march through the town displaying their arms and colours.

It is expected to be a colourful procession, with the mayor and other VIPs taking the salute.
