Friendly: Safa says Burkina, Fifa says Jordan

2011-07-15 00:00

JOHANNESBURG — The Fifa website currently indicates Bafana Bafana will play Jordan on August 10, however, the South African Football Association (Safa) has indicated it knows nothing of the fixture.

Bafana are scheduled to play Burkina Faso at the Ellis Park Stadium on the same day.

The official website of football’s world governing body states South Africa will face Jordan in its capital city Amman. Safa president Kirsten Nematandani said: “I wish to stress here and now that we have signed an agreement with the Burkinabe Football Association to play a friendly game against them in South Africa on August 10.

“I know absolutely nothing about the said Jordan game.”

Bafana Bafana were initially scheduled to play Nigeria, but the friendly fell through because of divisions with the Nigerian Football Association, after the match was agreed in principle with Safa on June 1.

Safa was interested in playing against Cote d’Ivoire when Nigeria withdrew, but the Elephants already had commitments with Israel. The next high ranking African team was Burkina Faso.
