Friends, Sando aim for title

2014-09-11 00:00

GREENWOOD Park Friends and Sando are the two protagonists fighting for the coveted DCFA Premier League title after last week’s round of fixtures.

Sando are a mere two points adrift of Friends after dealing with Villa Park 4-1, although Friends have a game in hand.

Friends strengthened their cause with a strong 4-0 win against Westville Old Boys (WOB), relegating the latter into the first Division next season.

Earlier in the week, Sando had gleaned more vital points in a 2-0 win against relegation threatened Hearts, while Stella continued their revival with a 1-0 win against New Orleans, who are in serious danger of joining WOB in the drop.

Villa Park earned a vital point in a 1-1 draw with Riverside in a clash either side could have won. Villa Park squandered a hat full of opportunities in the first half and could have been well ahead, while Riverside were denied a legitimate penalty with barely a minute left on the clock.

A foul in the penalty area saw a Villa Park player given his marching orders and the referee giving a free kick as the result, with Riverside players scratching their heads in disbelief.

Stars, also in need of points, however they may come, dug in for a share of the spoils with a 0-0 draw against last year’s champions Newlands.

The top of the log sees GWP Friends on 55 points from 24 matches, with Sando on 53 points from 25 games. Juventus are a distant third on 43 points (24 games), with Newlands and Riverside both on 40 points from 24 and 25 matches respectively.

At the bottom end, WOB have been relegated with 14 points from 24 matches, while New Orleans are hanging on with 21 points from 24 games. Just above them are Villa Park on 22 points, Hearts 23 points and Stars 24 points.

This week sees the final round of fixtures.
